International Day of Education: Comr. Lateef Taiwo Sofiyah Calls for Action to Protect Students’ Future

Today, as the world marks the International Day of Education, we are reminded that education remains one of the strongest tools we have to fight poverty, ignorance, inequality, and underdevelopment. Education builds the foundation for justice, democracy, innovation, and lasting national growth.

Education is not a favor from the government. It is a basic human right. Any society that neglects education is quietly damaging its own future. Sadly, many students across our country still face serious challenges such as poor funding, bad learning environments, unstable school calendars, high school fees, and insecurity on campuses. Many young people, especially girls and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, are still being left behind by policies that should protect them.

From my office, I speak up for an education system that truly serves the people. We need schools that are affordable, accessible, inclusive, and able to give quality learning. Education should not keep suffering because of avoidable strikes, poor decisions, or lack of care from those in leadership. Students deserve stability, respect, and an environment where they can learn, grow, and develop their talents.

Education is more than just classrooms and exams. It is about raising young people who can think for themselves, lead with integrity, and contribute positively to society. A nation cannot silence its students and expect progress. Young voices must be heard, respected, and included in decisions that shape their future.

We call on governments at all levels, policymakers, school authorities, and all stakeholders to take education seriously. There must be better funding, transparent management, student-friendly policies, and strong support for girl-child education and youth inclusion. Equal access to education must become a reality, not just a promise.

On this International Day of Education, we are not asking for speeches alone. We are asking for real commitment, real accountability, and real action. Education must be protected and improved because the future of our nation depends on it.

An educated student is an empowered citizen. An empowered citizen is the strength of any nation.
